A trench and a new concrete cistern from Alberta Wilbert Sales all part of a bigger water system plan for this acreage owner.

They wanted to be able to operate a sprinkler system and water trees, the lower producing well they had would not have been able to keep up with the demands so we installed a large cistern.

This way, there should never become a no-water situation from a well pit pumped dry.

Some wells are amazing, overflowing, never ending supply of water and others are a precious resource we work to preserve. The size of the access space has absolutely zero connection to the quality of the well.

Here’s a video of a client’s well as I was finishing up the drawdown test to see what it’s viability for life and reliance was.

Sadly, it was not very reliable.

We discussed the options for moving forward - cistern or drill a new well - and we both agreed that drilling a new well was the best option as this one needed to support a household and trying to fill a cistern with this little flow is not viable.

Wells do dry up. One needs to have contingency plans for should that day ever come. It’s a hard reality to living out in the country.

Sea-Cans are amazing!

The list can go on.

For this client, we took a small sea-can and turned it into the Pump Shack. Complete with breaker, access to the wells and pressure tank inside.

It will stay cool enough in the summer and insulated in the winter that all working parts, barring crazy crazy Alberta weather, will continue to function, leading to less risk of weather torment and longer life.

Creative thinking leads to some pretty amazing systems. Plus this one can be locked and it quite difficult to just pick up and load on a truck without being seen 😉

These midsized cisterns are great for in your mechanical room, under the stairs or in the garage (closest to the heartbeat of the house is best).

What makes these so great is that they are of poly construction, often come in 2 or three pieces so we can take them down tight stairwells, and hold enough water for a large family living on a low producing well.

When do you need a cistern?
